BALTIMORE (AP) — Corey Seager hit his third career grand slam to cap an eight-run fourth inning in Friday’s game that the Texas Rangers beat the Baltimore Orioles 12-2.
The Rangers entered the game with the best runs per game average in the majors at 6.33, and they showed why during a wild fourth inning that included a two-run homer by Robbie Grossman, two hits by Josh Jung, another pair from Josh Smith and Seager’s bases-loaded shot all the way to center field.
This made it easier for Jon Gray (5-1), who had his fourth win, the best streak of his career. The right-hander allowed one run and four hits in seven innings, striking out eight and walking one.
Texas has won nine of 12 games to reach a 32-18 record, third-best in the majors behind Tampa Bay and Baltimore. The Rangers lead the West Division of the American League, after finishing fourth last year, with 94 losses.
Leody Taveras hit a two-run homer in the second inning to give Texas the lead for good.
For the Rangers, the Cuban Adolis García 5-0. The Dominican Taveras 4-2 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Puerto Rican Sandy León 5-1 with a run scored.
For the Orioles, Venezuelan Anthony Santander 3-0. The Mexican Ramón Urías 1-0. The Dominican Jorge Mateo 3-0.
