A drone showed images of the heart of “Don Goyo”. (Special)

On the morning of May 25, personnel from the Secretary of the Navy (semar) and the National Civil Protection Coordination (CNPC) carried out an overflight of the volcano popocatepetl by using a drone.

The objective of this operation was to have a better knowledge regarding the activity inside the craterincluding the speed of the magma and the formation of the volcano’s dome, as detailed by Jorge López Martínez, a geophysical engineer from the Ministry of the Interior.

Although the authorities had already planned to use an aerial device to capture unpublished images of “Don Goyo”, this had not been possible due to the weather conditions that had occurred in previous days, since a completely clear sky was required, without clouds or wind currents. .

It was not until the morning of the aforementioned day that, from Amecameca, personnel from both institutions managed to coordinate this activity.

The impressive images that the drone captured reflected the movement from the heart of the volcano, which provided very useful information to evaluate the behavior of the geological structure and make decisions on Civil Protection.

The videos were broadcast on the official networks of the governor of Puebla, Sergio Salomon Cespedesas well as on different digital platforms and offered an unprecedented approach to the current movements of Popocatépetl.

The governor of Puebla, Sergio Salomón, released images of the volcanic activity in the crater of the colossus.

The use of cameras with thermal vision from the Navy drone allowed us to observe the structure of the crater in detail, as well as the amount of magma accumulated inside. Other images revealed, with an approximation that would not be possible by other means, the intensity with which “Don Goyo” maintains its smoke and gas emissions.
