GENEVA (AP) — Grigor Dimitrov advanced to his first ATP Tour final in more than five years by beating Taylor Fritz 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (2) on Friday at the Geneva Open. .
Dimitrov trailed 4-2 before turning around to win his first semi-final since February 2018 when rival David Goffin withdrew in Rotterdam.
The Bulgarian tennis player created a match point opportunity against Fritz in an incredible somersault with a powerful forehand and angled drops on both sides of the net. The American slipped and fell to his knees on the clay to watch as Dimitrov hit the game-winner on an empty court.
The result was sealed by a lob shot from the second seed as Dimitrov (4) closed in on the net.
“It was a crazy duel. I’m honestly happy with the way I struggled,” Dimitrov said.
The Bulgarian sits 33rd in the world rankings and came to Geneva 12-9 on the season.
“I arrived this week with a purpose and with the goal of reaching the end,” he said.
He has just one clay-court title in eight career wins. His last title was at the ATP Finals in 2017.
Dimitrov will face Chilean Nicolás Jarry, who defeated third seed Alexander Zverev 7-6 (3), 6-3 in a rematch of the 2019 Geneva final in the final on Saturday.
Jarry sealed the result with a delicate backhand volley into the net, a day after he knocked out top seed Casper Ruud, the two-time defending champion from the tournament.
Zverev and Ruud had won the last three editions of the event that serves as a warm-up for the French Open and neither had lost until they faced the Chilean number 54 in the world.
Jarry is seeking his second title of the year after winning the clay tournament in Santiago in March.
