In the case of the collapse of a section of Line 12 of the Mexico City Metro, this Friday, March 17, the judge was expected to issue the order to open the oral trial against eight former officials, however, the hearing was adjourned to June 1, 2023.

The judge decided to suspend the hearing against eight former officials accused of this accident because the investigation has not been closed for two of the defendants.

The judge argued that the accusations of all the defendants should be accumulated, that is, a single hearing should be held for the ten defendants for the accident on May 3, 2021, which left 26 people dead and one hundred injured.

On this day, Gabriel Regino, the lawyer who is defending five of the former employees accused of this accident, stated that they were also notified of the final suspension in favor of Enrique Horcasitasformer director of the Metro Project, with which an oral trial against him is prevented.

“We have great advances in federal justice and we know that sooner or later we are going to win,” said the litigant as he left the Court this Friday.

In addition, lawyer Cristopher Estupiñán, representative of other defendants, explained that when the hearing is held on June 1, they will discuss the evidence offered by the Mexico City Prosecutor’s Office, which totals 270 and includes 85. documentaries, 127 testimonials and 58 expert opinions.

The litigant explained: “The admission of the same will be discussed and, of course, the order will be sought at the opening of the oral trial, in which the trial would have to be carried out shortly, for the purpose of determining if they are guilty or not of the crimes that the defendants are being accused of”.

The Mexico City Prosecutor’s Office requested a sentence of 80 years in prison against each of the former officials, whom it accused of the crimes of homicide, injury and property damage.

Although the defendants are willing to reach a reparation agreement, lawyer Cristopher Estupiñán clarified that the defense of the victims has not made any proposal.

Therefore, if at the hearing on June 1 the judge issues the order to open the oral trial, there will no longer be the possibility of an alternate exit for the defendants.
