Didier Deschamps, coach of the French national team, confirmed, on Thursday, that Kylian Mbappe is a prominent candidate for the captaincy of the team.

Deschamps will need a new captain for the French national team in the Euro 2024 qualifiers against the Netherlands and Ireland, after goalkeeper Hugo Lloris announced his international retirement.

Loris retired from international football after the end of the World Cup and France lost to Argentina in the final, while Mbappe, the tournament’s top scorer, has leadership qualities.

Deschamps said: There are some who I consider a possibility to lead, Kylian is one of them.

He added: Discussions will be held with them before I make my decision, there is a responsibility associated with being the leader, with a slightly more important responsibility, but I would like to have some discussions internally before I make my decision.
