After two years of knowing the data, due to the limitations imposed by the COVID19 pandemicthe led foundation (Libertad de Prensa + Democracia) presented its Annual Report “Limitations to the Exercise of Freedom of Expression – Argentina 2022″, in which it revealed the number of cases on limitations to freedom of expression that were registered last year in the Argentina. This is the 12th work presented by the Foundation since its creation in 2011.

According to the organism’s consideration, they are 182 cases that constitute acts of direct or indirect censorshipor other actions that somehow restrict or limit the exercise of freedom of expression or access to information to journalists or citizens in our country.

“The confrontation between the government and the media has been the main factor of tension regarding the exercise of freedom of expression and of the press during this year. In particular, the use of concepts such as “fake news”, “lawfare” and “hate speech” To try to delegitimize journalists and media seems to have established itself as a common practice among officials and leaders of all levels of government”, reflects the report.

Likewise, another of the cases in which the report pays particular attention is the growing activity of organized crime against the press, particularly in the city of Rosario.

“Although what has been reported is worrying enough, the Argentine press is facing a scourge that is not new but that has been magnified during 2022 to a scale that is already unacceptable. He actions of organized crime, particularly drug trafficking, threatening and attacking the press has reached such a level in our country, and particularly in the city of Rosario, that seriously jeopardizes the possibility of independent journalistic work there. 288 Rosarios were murdered during 2022, this escalation continues and there are already fears for the physical integrity of the journalists threatened in different events that have occurred during the last year,” they say.

And they add: “These are, to the understanding of the Foundation, the two most worrisome threats that restrict the validity of the rights that we defend, but not the only ones”.
