Inter club missed the opportunity to jump to second place in the standings table, albeit temporarily at the expense of its neighbor Milan, by losing at home to Empoli 0-1 on Monday in the nineteenth stage of the Italian Football League.
Inter entered the match a point behind its rivals Milan, the defending champions, but failed in its quest to rise to second place behind leaders Napoli.
Inter Milan suffered a painful blow five minutes before the end of the first half, when its Slovak international defender Milan Shkriniar was sent off for a second yellow card.
Things got complicated for Inter in the second half, and conceded a goal in the 66th minute when Albanian Nadim Bayrami converted a decisive pass to the 19-year-old Tommaso Baldanzi, who scored his third goal of the season.
With this loss, Inter remained in third place with 37 points, one point behind Milan, who will visit Lazio on Tuesday, and equal on points with fourth Roma.
In another match, Monday, Bologna drew 1-1 at home to bottom club Cremonese.
The guests took the lead from a penalty kick scored by Nigerian David Okereke (50), but Cremonese were denied their first victory this season when Romanian Vlad Chericis scored an own goal (55).
