Senegal coach Aliou Cisse has full confidence in goalkeeper Edouard Mendy despite his difficult start to the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
It can be said that Mendy, whom Sisi said was steel and would start in the second match in Group A against Qatar, made a mistake in the two goals of his country’s 2-0 loss against the Netherlands.
“Edouard is doing very well and has steel determination,” Cisse told reporters on Thursday.
He added: Edward’s potential speaks for itself, I do not think there is anyone who doubts him, sometimes he has great levels and sometimes he retreats, and he has my full confidence, my blind confidence, and also the confidence of his colleagues, and on Friday he will be on the field.
It seemed that the Senegal match against the Netherlands was on its way to a tie until the 84th minute, when Frenkie de Jong sent a cross to the penalty area. Mendy went out to meet it, but he did not approach it and Cody Jakobo snatched it with his head to score the first goal for his country.
And in stoppage time, Mendy did not succeed in accurately blocking Memphis Depay’s shot, and the ball returned to Davy Claassen and he scored in the empty goal, to settle the victory for the Netherlands.
Senegal, who is missing its first star Sadio Mane due to injury, won the African Nations Cup after beating Egypt on penalties in February, and will play Asian champions Qatar on Friday.
Senegal were knocked out at the group stage in the World Cup four years ago, and it is likely that this will happen again if they do not beat Qatar.
