Croatia captain Luka Modric stressed the difficulty of the Moroccan national team, after a goalless tie separated them on Wednesday.

The Atlas Lions, who played among a large number of their fans at Al Bayt Stadium, tied without goals with Croatia, the runner-up of the last edition, in a match with few chances in the first round of Group Six of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Modric said after the match: We were right, the Moroccan team is deceitful and difficult. We didn’t let them get too close (to the penalty area) and what we needed was a goal. If we were more creative, they might give us more space.

He added: We did not come here just to play and pass the group stage, as our ambition is greater than that based on the experience we gained from the World Cup in Russia. But our initial ambition is to pass the group stage, and if we can do that, we will pose a threat to every team.

He concluded: Don’t get me wrong, our goal is to pass the group stage, but our ambition is beyond that.
