German legend Franz Beckenbauer has confirmed that he will not go to Qatar to watch the World Cup matches, due to health problems.
Beckenbauer told “Punte” magazine on Wednesday: I will not travel to Qatar, I will continue to support our team in front of the TV screen.
Beckenbauer, 77, added: I suffer from what is called an ocular infarct (anterior ischemic optic neuropathy) in one eye. Unfortunately, I don’t see anything with the right eye. I can handle that, and I have to be careful with the heart.
Beckenbauer was crowned the World Cup in 1974 as a player, and he also won the 1990 World Cup as a coach. He chaired the organizing committee for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, but he has disappeared from public view in recent years, and rarely attends matches.
