Toilet paper from university in Japan has motivational message

Several universities in Japan have launched an original initiative to prevent suicide among young people: printing reassuring messages on toilet paper.

“Honey, you are having a rough day and pretending everything is fine,” reads one message. “You don’t have to explain everything to us… but why not a little?” he continues.

Officials in Yamanashi, west of Tokyo, distributed 6,000 of these rolls to 12 local universities last month.

“You are alone in the bathrooms. We feel that it is in these moments that the harrowing ideas can arise,” a department official, Kenichi Miyazawa, told AFP.

As in many other countries, Japan has seen an increase in the number of suicides with the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2020, almost 500 children and adolescents took their lives in the archipelago, a national record and twice as many as in 2016, according to the Ministry of Health.
