Violence in Sonora intensified after an armed command deprived of liberty and later murdered a policeman who had been assigned to the security of the Municipal Presidency of Caborcaheaded by Abraham David Mier Nogales.

This event occurred almost at the same time that some drug messages in which hitmen from the group of Los Chapitos warned about a “cleaning” of municipal police and military in that town, although it has not been confirmed whether this criminal group would be the alleged perpetrator of the crime.

Under that context, the Department of Public Security (SSP) of the state announced that one of its elements was found lifeless on Friday, November 18. Although it was reported that the officer was doing security work at the Municipal Presidency of Caborca, they did not provide further details.

“The SSP confirms that around 8:20 pm local time a report was received of the deprivation of life of an element of the Caborca municipal police. The active element of the municipal police was assigned to the Municipal Presidency of said municipality.

Local reports indicated that on Friday afternoon the policeman had been deprived of his liberty outside his home located in the city of Pitiquito by a group of armed individuals. Subsequently, his body was located with traces of bullet wounds on the road known as Las Calabazas.

According to the Sonora Observatory for Security, the agent who was killed was identified as Jose Ramon Canez Leonwho served as “chief escort” of the municipal president of Caborca, Abraham “El Cubano” Mier. Faced with this situation, the organization demanded justice for the 31-year-old police officer and his family due to the high rates of impunity that prevail in the state, since they indicated that the police officers “need better conditions to carry out their work.”

According to information taken up by local media, Cáñez León first served as a member of the SSP Operational Group. Although he was a native of the Pitiquito community, he traveled to Caborca every day to do his security work. Until now It is unknown if the uniformed man had previously received threats.

Although the Caborca and Pitiquito City Councils (2021-2024) issued a brief message in which they expressed their condolences to family and friends of the victim, Mayor Araham David Mier has not ruled on the matter.

After his murder, members of organized crime left a message that was found next to the Cuauhtémoc elementary school. On the card appears the signature of La Chapiza in which they supposedly warn military personnel not to intervene in the “cleansing” of municipal police.

“The cleanup of municipalities and the Army of the Cuartelense begins or take care of any element of the army that is surprised outside the civilian cartel, we do not respond Att on the 8th of Sonoyta CHAPIZA (sic.)”

And it is that in Caborca there is a rivalry and a territorial dispute between two criminal factions, mainly. On the one hand they arethe little boys” (cell led by the sons of Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán) and, on the other, is Square that allegedly control relatives of Rafael Caro Quintero.
